5 Factors that will affect the cost of your Breakdown Cover…

How long do you need cover?

With options for monthly, annual, or pay and claim cover, you can tailor your policy to suit the length of time you’ll need to be covered.

Do you need personal or vehicle-based cover?

Prices will vary depending on whether you want to cover a particular vehicle in the event of a breakdown, or whether you want to tie the cover to yourself, so that you get the benefits no matter which car you’re driving. Generally, personal cover is the more expensive option.

Which car do you drive?

The age and make of your vehicle plays a big part in the likelihood of it breaking down, and so naturally, it also affects the price of your cover.

Where will you drive?

With cover available for local, national, or even European recovery, it’s important to think about how you intend to use your vehicle before committing to a particular type of cover.

Do you need Add-ons?

Many standard policies make exclusions, such as limiting the number of call-outs allowed within the duration of a policy, or not covering wheel changes, faults due to human error and so on. Make sure to add-on any extras that you need.

Help! What does this word mean?

Dip into our simple glossary of Breakdown Cover terms to decode the jargon…

Breakdown Cover is a policy that ensures you will get assistance if you break down while driving.

Commercial Breakdown Cover if you use your car or van for business purposes, you’ll need this special policy to ensure you’re covered while you work.

EU Cover is included in some policies, while in others it is an optional add-on. Guarantees that if you breakdown while driving in an EU country, you’ll get assistance quickly from an English-speaking repairer.

Home Assistance if your vehicle should fail either at your home, or within 1/4 mile distance from it, home assistance ensures that you’ll be covered and can receive help from a repairer.

Local Recovery included in most standard policies, local recovery ensures that your vehicle will be towed either to your home, or your local garage (whichever is nearer) in the event that the repairer is unable to fix it at the roadside.

Multi-car/Family Cover if you have multiple cars to cover, this kind of policy can save you money and effort. Usually up to 5 cars can be included in one policy. Generally, they must be kept at one address, but they do not need to be owned by the same driver.

Number of Call-outs a call-out is an instance when a repairer is called to assist you, and in many cases your cover might limit the number call-outs that can be made for one car, or one driver, within the duration of a policy. It’s worth watching out for this exclusion while browsing for Breakdown Cover.

Onward Travel if your car cannot be fixed at the roadside, you don’t want to end up stuck there yourself! Onward Travel could include hire car, the reimbursement of public transport costs, or accommodation costs if you can’t get where you need to be by nightfall. It’s not normally included in standard cover, but might be worth taking out as an add-on, particularly if you’re going on a holiday or road trip.

Pay and Claim Cover often the cheapest form of Breakdown Cover, you pay a small annual fee, but rather than getting assistance from the provider, they send you local repairers when you need help. One big difference is that you need to then pay the repairer on the spot, so if you want this kind of cover you should really ensure you have the necessary cash, or capacity on your credit card, before you set out on long journeys.

Personal Breakdown Cover is tied to you, the driver, rather than your vehicle, so you’ll get the benefits and assistance you need no matter what you’re driving.

Response Time the time it takes between your original phone call and a repairer arriving to help you. Obviously, the shorter the better, and many companies boast response times of 40 minutes to an hour.

Roadside Recovery includes both local and national recovery. If you choose a policy with Roadside Recovery then you’re guaranteed that your car will be towed home, or to a garage, if it can’t be fixed at the roadside.

Vehicle-based Breakdown Cover is tied to a particular vehicle, rather than a driver. It’s normally cheaper than Personal Breakdown Cover.
